What is a Disciple of Jesus Christ?

A disciple is a believer who’s life is dedicated to the Lordship and Ministry of Jesus Christ. The term, disciple, is found in the New Testament only in the Gospels and Acts. In the ancient world, a disciple is a follower or adherent of a teacher. Discipleship is not the same as being a student in the modern sense. A disciple in the ancient biblical world actively imitated both the life and teaching of the master. It was a deliberate apprenticeship which made the fully formed disciple a living copy of the master
(1 John 4:17).

The Posture of a Disciple

Disciples are to become more like Christ in everything. As we submit to His Lordship, He teaches us how to walk as He walks. He is the goal and he's our standard. As we embrace this truth by faith our lives become beacons of light, giving God glory as bear good fruit.

1 John 2:6 CSB - “The one who says he remains in him should walk just as he walked.”-

This word walk here means to live or to live out. The aspect of Christ that the Bible tells us to live out is His morality. So when we proclaim that we are in Christ, the evidence of that is our lifestyle. Because our walk confirms our proclamation.  This speaks to true discipleship. When we are discipled into Christ, we die to ourselves and STUDY to live as He lived.

1 Peter 2:21 - CSB “For you were called to this, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.”

Our election speaks to our posture. In other words your calling should bring boundaries, standards, and a will to yield to the example Christ has sat before us. This is what it means to be the light, to bear much fruit, and to walk as He did. In discipleship we study to manifest His image. We study His ways so that through the Spirit, He can continue to be a physical example through us. See Jesus came and sacrificed Himself to do away with sin so that the Holy Sprit can dwell in us. How that He is in us, He reveals the mysteries of Christ so that we can physically walk as He did in order that we can advance His kingdom.
Ephesians 5:1 - 4 CSB - “Therefore, be imitators of God, as dearly loved children, and walk in love, as Christ also loved us and gave himself for us, a sacrificial and fragrant offering to God. But sexual immorality and any impurity or greed should not even be heard of among you, as is proper for saints. Obscene and foolish talking or crude joking are not suitable, but rather giving thanks. For know and recognize this: Every sexually immoral or impure or greedy person, who is an idolater, does not have an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.”

Philippians 3:12 - 14 CSB - “Not that I have already reached the goal or am already perfect, but I make every effort to take hold of it because I also have been taken hold of by Christ Jesus. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and reaching forward to what is ahead, I pursue as my goal the prize promised by God’s heavenly call in Christ Jesus.”
Galatians 2:20 CSB - “I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”
